Caltrans Bay Area Bike Highway Study

Alta Planning + Design is worked with Caltrans Bay Area to develop the Bay Area Bicycle Superhighway Concept Study. The project on assessing the potential opportunities to develop bicycle superhighways along State Highway System (SHS) corridors in District 4. More specifically, the Alta team is focusing on understanding which state highways represent the biggest opportunity for providing long distance regional connections and which may represent the biggest barriers for complementing the already existing low-stress bicycle connections throughout the Bay Area such as the Bay Trail. David served as a technical lead on the project advising on the prioritization and feasibility analysis. As part of this project, David conducted a demand analysis that leveraged MTC’s Travel Demand model to identify corridors whose alignment relative to modeled trips were proximal, of a suitable length, and aligned with the corridor. This demand analysis was integrated with a comprehensive equity and feasibility analysis that David provided implementation guidance for. These analyses were combined with a geographic balancing exercise to identify key corridors for candidate Bicycle Highways.

You can find out more about Bike Highways in a recent Alta blog post on the topic.
